Augustusburg Castle - Schloss Augustusburg at the small town of Brühl is situated about 20 km southwest of Cologne. Augustusburg Castle represent one of the earliest examples and most breathtaking creations of the Rococo architecture in Germany, it was built from 1725 to 1768. Augustusburg Castle was built for Clemens August I of Bavaria, at first he was a Prince-Bishop of Regensburg and Hildesheim, later he also served as Archbishop of Cologne and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Augustusburg Castle was designed and decorated by the most famous architects and artists of that time. The castle is decorated with frescoes, sculptures, blue and white Dutch tiles, and Delft pottery. Augustusburg Castle is known for its magnificent staircase, designed by Balthasar Neumann, one of the greatest German architects of that time, he also designed the famous Würzburg Residence and the New Town Hall in Bamberg. The German Government hosted receptions at Augustusburg Castle from 1949 until 1996. The Schlosspark of Augustusburg Castle was designed in the style of the French Baroque gardens of Versailles. A short stroll from Augustusburg Castle stands Falkenlust Castle. The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl gained status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: Augustusburg Castle was built in between 1725 and 1768 on the ruins of a medieval castle and represent one of the earliest examples and most breathtaking creations of the Rococo architecture in Germany. The imposing castle was built for Clemens August I of Bavaria, he died before it was completed. The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.

The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust are only accessible by guided tour. It is not permitted to take any photos inside the castles at Brühl. The town of Brühl is situated about 20 km southwest of Cologne city centre.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: Augustusburg Castle is an imposing U-shaped building. THe castle was the principal residence of Clemens August I of Bavaria, Archbishop of Cologne. The most impressive part of Augustusburg Castle is the central staircase, designed by Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753), one of the most renowned German architects of his time. The staircase was built to impress visitors.

From 1949 until 1996, the German President and German Government hosted receptions at Augustusburg Castle, the most famous state guests were Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Nelson Mandela, Michail Gorbatsjov and the Polish-born Pope Johannes Paul II.

The two castles at Brühl were embellished with frescoes, sculptures and Delft pottery, the famous Dutch blue tiles, the walls are covered in leather and gold wallpapers. Both castles are located close to each other in Schlosspark Augustusburg. The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl represent some of the earliest examples of the Rococo architecture in Germany.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: Augustusburg Castle is surrounded by French Baroque gardens and an English landscape garden. The French Baroque gardens were created by Dominique Girard in 1728. The flower beds are surrounded by boxwood hedges, framed by borders planted with colourful summer flowers. The gardens are adorned with fountains, they were designed in the French garden style, inspired by the gardens of Versailles.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: The French Baroque gardens that surround Augustusburg Castle are adorned with garden ornaments, among them several huge vases. It took more than forty years to built and decorate the sumptuous castle and gardens. The castle served as a model for many other princely courts in Germany. Augustusburg Castle served as the summer residence for Clemens August I of Bavaria.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: The huge Mirror Pool in Augustusburg Park, Augustusburg Castle is located in the background, reflected in the still water of the huge square Mirror Pool. The pool is fed by a small cascade, running from a round pond with a monumental fountain. The Schlosspark is the garden of the castle, it is one of the most original examples of 18th century garden design in Europe.

   Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl: The Garden Walk in Augustusburg Park. The design of Schlosspark Augustusburg was inspired by the gardens of Versailles in France. A short stroll from Augustusburg Castle stands the Falkenlust hunting lodge, both castles are situated in Augustusburg Park. The French Baroque gardens are surrounded by forested areas, designed in the English landscape style by the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné.
