Historic Centre of Córdoba

Historic Centre of Córdoba: The most famous building and the symbol of Córdoba is the Great Mosque. The Mosque of Córdoba is the largest and one of the oldest mosques in Europe. The mosque is located in the historic centre of Cordóba in Spain. The Mosque of Córdoba was built between 785 and 987. The famous red and white striped horseshoe-shaped arches resembles those of Aachen Cathedral, which was built almost at the same time. The Mezquita of Córdoba, the Great Mosque of Córdoba, was converted into a church when King Ferdinand III of Castile reconquered Córdoba in 1236. A cathedral was built inside the mosque in 1523. The Mosque of Córdoba and the Alhambra in Granada are the most notable monuments of Arabic architecture in the Western World. Another imposing monument in the historic centre of Córdoba is the 14th century Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, the water gardens of the palace were laid out on three terraces. The Historic Centre of Córdoba was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.
