Old Village of Hollókő and its Surroundings: Hollókő is a tiny village in Hungary, situated about 92 km northeast of Budapest. The ruins of the Castle of Hollókő dominates the Old Village of Hollókő and its surroundings. Hollókő Castle was built in the 13th century. The village was built just below the castle walls. The Ottomans captured the castle in 1552. At end of the Ottoman occupation in 1683, Hollókő Castle was abandoned. Most of the still existing houses were built around this time. The houses with the typical gable roofs, porches and whitewashed wooden walls are well preserved. The Roman Catholic Church of Hollókő was built in 1889. The double cross on the tower shows that this little village used to have certain privileges during the Middle Ages. Hollókő is inhabited by the Palóc people. The Palóc people speak a characteristic dialect and wear richly adorned folk clothes. Today, Hollókő is a good example of the rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century. The raven is the symbol of Hollókő (Holló means raven, kő means stone). The Old Village of Hollókő and its Surroundings gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1987.
