Rhaetian Railway, the Albula and Bernina Lines

Rhaetian Railway in the Albula and Bernina Landscapes: The Rhaetian Railway is situated in Italy and Switzerland and is regarded as one of the most spectacular railway lines in the world. The Rhaetian Railway brings together two historic railway lines in the Alps, the Albula Railway and the Bernina Railway, a mountain railroad network whose lines connect Switzerland to Italy. The construction of the Albula Railway started in 1898. In 1903, after five yaers of construction, the spectacular railway line between Thusis and St. Moritz was opened. The 67 km long line is a masterpiece of railway engineering. The Albula Railway passes over 55 bridges, through 39 tunnels and climbs over 1,000 metres in altitude. Together with the Albula Railway, the Bernina Railway is one of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps. The Bernina Railway connects Chur, Davos and St. Moritz in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy, via the Bernina Pass. The 61 km long Bernina Railway was opened in several sections, the whole line was opened in 1910, when the most difficult section between Bernina Suot and Poschiavo was completed. On its route the Bernina Railway passes the Morteratsch glacier and climbs across the highest railway pass in Europe, the 2253 metres high Bernina Pass. The Bernina Railway winds down to Poschiavo and Tirano, passing the helical viaduct near Brusio. The Albula Railway and the Bernina Railway were very important to overcome the isolation of the numerous villages in the Swiss Alps in the early 20th century. The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2008. Another Alpine railway on the UNESCO World Heritage List: The Semmering Railway in Austria.

The Albula Line is part of the network of the Rhaetian Railway. The 65 metres high Landwasser Viaduct is curved, it seems like the trains disappear straight into the rock face as they enter the 216 metres long Landwasser Tunnel.
